Halloween is a time for trick or treaters to walk the streets excited to get their little treats. Now that my daughters have outgrown this, every year my first instinct is to skip Halloween giving candy, but in the end I am handing out little bags of chips to these cute little children. Halloween is also known as All Saint’s and All Souls day. Some people make soul cakes to honour departed loved ones. On November 1, those who are departed are prayed for and venerated. Believers pray, fast, set our hearts to move from physical love to spiritual love. It is an opportunity to see that the road ahead paved with momentary frivolity will end but the preparation for our eternal home, is constantly before us to enrich our life and set a place for us in heaven.

When we remember the departed, the traditions grounded in love our ancestors laid for us, we can also call to mind our ancestors in the bible. Like us, the ones that were created in love, began in love, turned against love but in the end came to know God’s true love in their life. Sometimes, one can live a lifetime, having missed out on the opportunity to be fully loved my God. For many, it is in that final hour of one’s life, that one accepts, Jesus as saviour of their life. Man can fail us, but God’s love is unconditional and everlasting.

It is difficult to let go and say farewell to those we love, but with God their memory is eternal. Their life can be eternal. I do not know what life is without God. From the time I was very young I felt God’s presence. The older and wiser I become, I see two paths, a golden one in this life and a golden life in heaven. And it is these two paths, that in one suffering can remain in the soul, in the other suffering can turn to joy. I believe things make sense with God but without I am speechless and have profound sadness. May you live today as God would want.

Peace,

Claudia
